Here's the worst defense in the history of the U.S. court system:

An attorney for a Chicago police officer on trial in the beating of a female bartender in 2007 said the officer acted in self defense against the much smaller victim, saying she was the aggressor who shoved him.

"Defenseless? I think not," attorney Peter Hickey said during opening statements at the bench trial for his client, Anthony Abbate. "She tossed him around like a rag doll. If not for a garbage can that held him up against the bar, she would have had him on the ground."

If Abbate had an ounce of honor, he'd have pled guilty. Then again, I suppose Obrycka also forced him to try to intimidate her into getting rid of the security video, too.

I've said more than once recently that I wanted to know more about the entire body of Sotomayor's decisions before jumping on the "she's a racist, snarky, biased bitch" bandwagon.

Look, to my conservative friends, you're doing the same thing you accuse the left of having done with Bush's selections by jumping up and down and shrieking and wailing and gnashing your teeth.

Let's be more measured and thoughtful than that, and let's do our homework.

If you are going to have a problem with her, then let it be on the totality of her judgments, not on one or two that have been cherry-picked to stir the pot. And, yes; there's plenty there to sink your teeth into.

I've got two more sobering reads for you, both regarding spousal abuse. Go here and here. We all need to know more and do more about this.

If you judge a person who is used to abuse, and turn away in disgust, you only serve the purposes of the abuser. You have isolated her further and allowed him to be the sole source of emotional solace. The only way that the cycle of abuse can be stopped is in the light of day. Full transparency, loads of patient, sympathetic, empathetic friends, and empowerment of the victim. Please do not ever call a victim of domestic violence a "slow learner."

Man, does that ever hit close to home.
