(A tip of the cap to Poppy (who's really, really smart) and Sour (who... well.... I like her anyway.)) It was the math question that killed me. I suck at math.

In the face of the recent smoking ban in Illinois, this makes perfect sense, doesn't it?
At Wednesday's committee meeting, the most likely replacement touted was a 90-cent increase in the statewide sales tax on a pack of cigarettes, which would generate $350 million to $410 million a year, according to state and advocacy group estimates. While that would make Illinois one of the most expensive places to buy cigarettes in the country, nearby states also have passed large cigarette taxes, which means the disparity would not be as great as when Illinois raised cigarette taxes by 40 cents in 2002, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
You can't smoke them anywhere in public, people are quitting smoking right and left, and they want to charge the few smokers left more for the privilege of not being able smoke anywhere but at home and in your own vehicle.

Great. Just great. That makes tons of sense to me.

Glad I won't be contributing to that particular sin tax for very much longer.
