Hump Day

Quote of the Day:
"I am in full nip denial." -- Nancy Grace
*Ahem*

My take on DWTS this week?
  • My crystal ball for the Final 3 -- J.R. Martinez, Rikki Lake, Chynna Phillips
  • Much improved -- Nancy Grace, Rob Kardashian, Kristin Cavallari
  • Meh -- Hope Solo
  • Needs a medic, stat! Chaz Bono
  • Needs to quit horsing around in rehearsals and pay attention to the dances -- Carson Kressley, David Arquette
  • Won't miss her one little bit (buh-bye!) -- Elizabetta Canalis
  • Going home next week -- Chaz Bono, strictly based on his crunchy knees, not his heart or his efforts

You remember that recent post about the critter that squicks me out in a major way? Well, it seems the freaking things have shown up in U.S. waters!
A six-year-old girl who went fishing in a Texas lake using a piece of a hot dog as bait got more than she bargained for when she landed her very first catch - a flesh-eating piranha.

Lindsey Schutte and her parents took the fish home in a bucket unaware of its true identity - until it sank its razor-edged teeth into her seven-year-old brother's hand when he tried to play with it.
Argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(I'm guessing some idiot emptied his aquarium into the lake, never dreaming this might happen.)

Recycling on a very large scale?
It was designed to deter the red threat from the old Soviet Union, but now a Cold War-era missile has had the cobwebs brushed off to launch a U.S. military satellite.

The Peacekeeper, also known as an MX or intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), became part of America’s nuclear arsenal back in 1986 but was decommissioned in 2004.

Converted into a Minotaur IV rocket, it successfully blasted a Tactical Satellite-4 (TacSat-4) into space from a launchpad in Alaska.
How cool is that?

So... Dancing with the Stars, anyone?

This is the first season I've come into without any preconceived notions about who might be the one(s) to watch for the series. For me, there were some pleasant surprises and some downright disappointments. Here are my predictions for staying power:

The Best of the Men
  • J.R. Martinez -- he's handsome, he's charming and he can dance.
  • David Arquette -- surprisingly sweet, fully committed and shows lots of promise.
  • Chaz Bono -- personality, musicality and pretty decent footwork.
The Best of the Ladies
  • Chyna Phillips -- the appeal of Petra Nemcova - poise, sweetness and beautiful lines.
  • Rikki Lake -- her waltz was flat-out gorgeous.
  • Kristin Cavallari -- girlfriend can shake a bon-bon.
The Cloris Leachman Factor
  • Carson Kressley -- he brings the crazy fun, but can he really dance?
The Meh (in no particular order)
  • Hope Solo -- the judges loved her, but I thought she looked really awkward.
  • Nancy Grace -- she has potential, but has to bust out her big personality more.
  • Rob Kardashian -- again, he has potential, but where's the personality? the commitment?
Must. Go. Now.
  • Ron Artest -- no rhythm, no grace, no footwork, nada. Metta Whirled Peas.
  • Elizabetta Canallis -- no musicality, no grace, no footwork, zero personality. What was Clooney thinking?
So how did you stack them up?

Quick Stop Step

Regarding DWTS Week 3:
  • Petra is sweet, but gawky. NO WAY should she have ended up in first place tonight.
  • Please, please, please let Chelsea Kane dance somewhere towards the middle or end of the night. Her scores are much lower than they should be because she's being penalized by being stuck dancing early.
  • Someone show Ralph what the judges mean when they talk about the hand thing. Creepy!
  • Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Please let Maks be okay!
  • Who drugged the judges' water bottles tonight?
Urk. It's going to be a long season.

Photography and friendship -- no wonder I loved this story!
During his trip, Bieber took his own pictures. He took a few final shots with Roche and one of her brothers, and then they put the film canister outside the Café des Deux Moulins in Montmartre, the restaurant where Amelie works in the movie.

In the canister, they left a note that read, "It happened once, it can happen again. If you find me, I can buy you coffee and we'll become friends. It's the beginning of an adventure."

I love DSL, but you'll never find that creating this kind of story... unless the whole camera is lost and then found.

More info on the food truck here and here. HBO really has gone nuts on promoting this series, as evidenced by the themed store it's opened in Manhattan.

Quote of the Day:
By way of summary, President Obama has developed a doctrinal approach to international affairs that differs not only from that of his immediate predecessor, but from any doctrine ever embraced by any major power. He eschews the notion of national interest, pays undue deference to international actors who may or may not mean us well, and deploys American troops without clear objectives or lines of command.

In short, he has delivered precisely the foreign policy that he promised to deliver. [Emphasis mine]

While not much news from the Middle East is amusing these days, I am finding humor in the fact that no one seems to agree on the correct spelling of a certain Libyan leader's first or last name in English. Quick Stop

Argh! There's a Super Moon out indeed, and I feel like it's lasted 10 days already! The craziness continues today -- I'm off to drain and recycle a vein in about 45 minutes, and then I've got to track down a television for the premiere of Season 12 of DWTS. Maks and Kirstie Alley -- it's too crazy to process.

To much to do, too little time...

And would someone please stop flipping the crazy switch into its locked and upright position at my office???

Quote of the Day:
I am sympathetic. However... here's the problem, as I see it: These kids are not being gunned down; they're gunning each other down. The problem starts in the home, and change also needs to start in the home. Standing in the street and praying in front of cameras won't fix anything; being present every day and parenting your own kids well will.

I'm sorry, but $16 million would be better spent on teachers' salaries in this state right now. This is just one more example of governmental decision making processes that care more about pleasing "popular" agendas than actually fulfilling the mandate of educating children in this state. Oh, well. Dick and Jane may not be educated in Illinois, but, by golly, they'll be fashionably fit.

Maybe not, but a dear friend of mine who works for the IRS informed me Friday night that the IRS has been champing at the bit to begin hiring not hundreds, but thousands, of new IRS agents to do nothing but ensure that businesses and individuals alike are complying with the new law, and that hiring will commence immediately on passage of the legislation. [Update: Here's more proof.]

Any way you look at either bill, it's the largest governmental power grab in the history of this country. Given that I'm already unhappy with this news: The five largest employers in the Chicago area are 1) the U.S. government; 2) Chicago public schools; 3) the City of Chicago; 4) the State of Illinois; and, 5) Cook County... and we can't afford any of them here at the moment... you can imagine my current level of disgust.

Mark my words -- we are about to get far more governmental intrusion into our lives and give up far larger portions of our paychecks than we ever thought possible.

Thank you, Mr. Boehner, for requesting a roll call vote. I want to know exactly who I will be working very hard to vote out of office in the next several elections.
_____

[snip] The study did, however, come up with one icky way bigger models can be used to actually influence product sales: “if a normal-size woman sees moderately heavy images in ads for weight-loss products, she might feel overweight and be more inclined to buy a diet plan or gym membership.” Basically, use plus-sized models to make women feel bad enough about themselves that they spend more money on gym memberships and diet products. [The Cut]

What do you think? Do ads with bigger models make you feel better or worse about yourself?
When it's models like these, they just want to make me go shopping for one of everything in their catalog, because I know I'm going to look and feel wonderful... and that's good, because I'm already educated, unlike Dick and Jane.

I have already entered a zero for the midterm for each of you who blew it off. If you want that zero changed into something else, be bloody sure you get that test taken before your time is up. After I place your test in the Testing Center, the rest is entirely up to you. If you don’t get yourself up there, the zero stands.

If you allow that zero to stand, you will need to present yourself to the registrar to withdraw from the class. You’ll also be required to pay back your financial aid.

Sincerely, Professor Had-It-Up-To-Here with the lot of you.

P.S. Students who showed up on the proper day get bonus points, which will be added at the end of the semester. Also? These students rock. They’re awesome, while you’re. . . . well, never mind. It was an antonym. I hope you had a good time in Cancun.

It looks like somebody down in Springfield has finally figured out that this program is not necessary. Now let's see if they can get it past the governor, who's just as bad as our former Governor Give-away....

In the meantime, the CTA and its labor unions continue to flail away at each other and the $95 million+ budget deficit that caused cuts to jobs and services in the first place. You know things are bad financially when even Jesse Jetstream concedes:
"The workers can't very well allow their health care and their 401(k)s and their pensions to be gutted,'' Jackson said after the meeting at CTA headquarters. "But the shortfall is limiting what the CTA can really do too." [Emphasis mine]

Speaking of dancing, apparently my beloved DWTS is going to be sleazing up the small screen this year. Let's hope she only lasts one episode. Seriously, hasn't Pamela Anderson used up her 15 minutes of fame long ago? If they get that slimy almost son-in-law of a former Alaska Governor, too, I'll be boycotting this year. There are some people I won't read about, right about or put up links for, and he's one of them. Yuck.

[T]here is a sense that something is different now; that something is broken; that those of us in Washington are not serving the people as well as we should. At times, it seems like we're unable to listen to one another; to have at once a serious and civil debate. And this erosion of civility in the public square sows division and distrust among our citizens. It poisons the well of public opinion. It leaves each side little room to negotiate with the other. It makes politics an all-or-nothing sport, where one side is either always right or always wrong when, in reality, neither side has a monopoly on truth.
This is rich, coming from the guy who's favorite mantra is "Blame Bush!"
Civility also requires relearning how to disagree without being disagreeable; understanding, as President [Kennedy] said, that "civility is not a sign of weakness."
This from the guy who likes to answer people who disagree with him by smirking, "I won."
It is this spirit of civility that we are called to take up when we leave here today. That's what I'm praying for. I know in difficult times like these -- when people are frustrated, when pundits start shouting and politicians start calling each other names -- it can seem like a return to civility is not possible, like the very idea is a relic of some bygone era. The word itself seems quaint -- civility.
And civility would extend to actually listening to what others are saying, instead of insisting that they're not hearing you. If the word seems quaint to you, it's because you don't extend it to those who disagree with you -- just ask anyone who's ever attended a Tea Party or voted against one of your pet causes.
Yes, there are crimes of conscience that call us to action. Yes, there are causes that move our hearts and offenses that stir our souls. But progress doesn't come when we demonize opponents. It's not born in righteous spite. Progress comes when we open our hearts, when we extend our hands, when we recognize our common humanity. Progress comes when we look into the eyes of another and see the face of God. That we might do so -- that we will do so all the time, not just some of the time -- is my fervent prayer for our nation and the world.
Pretty, empty words coming from an empty suit. When you start walking the walk instead of talking the talk, maybe I'll listen.

In the meantime, it's just more "stop demonizing me and what I want to do, you ChimpyMcBushHitlerHaliburtonTeabaggingPalin-HuggingHater, you."

I really resent that he used a prayer breakfast for his most recent self-righteous cudgel. That he truly doesn't see the irony is just sad.

I believe that everyone gets a second chance if they've made a stupid mistake, but paid their legal debt to society and truly tries to be a better human being. I was perfectly happy to extend Mel Gibson another chance. Then I saw this:

Clearly he was uncomfortable in the interview in the first place, and Richards just makes it worse. Honestly, he's got to be a publicist's nightmare, as first he blames his publicist for distracting him, then admits he "has a short fuse."

Whatever the case, not another dime of my money goes to a Mel Gibson movie -- not old rentals, not new movies. No more posts, ever. He's another one who's permanently off my list.

Update: More from Dean Richards' point of view here.
_____

This is not new news. Quite frankly, it's amazing that more big conventions didn't leave Chicago years ago. This is a case of unions stomping the golden goose right into the ground... and they'll probably raise their hourly rates and demand even more outrageous concessions because there are less conventions in the city and they're not making as much as they used to. Argh!

One of the reasons I like living in the 'burbs and taking Metra to work is that I don't have to put up with crap like this on the el. I like that there's a conductor for every 2-3 cars on Metra, and I like that they toss trouble-makers off the train without a second thought.
