A friend and I are headed to Nashville for Memorial Day weekend. Do you have any tips for great places to sight-see, eat, drink and hear great music (other than the obvious Ryman, Grand Ole Opry and Bluebird)?

Crossroads
It's the old conundrum:
Me? I'm avoiding hangovers at all cost (dinner and a movie with an old pal), but NOT via this method... otherwise tomorrow would be... well... like this:
Happy New Year to you and yours, however you choose to ring it in!

Merry Christmas, everyone!

In the Rear-View Mirror
On Father's Day, some things that remind me of my own Darling Daddy:
I miss him on Father's Day and every day.
- The scent of classic original Chapstick, which he always carried in his right front pocket;
- Cross Pen's Classic Century pen and pencil set tucked in a smart sport coat breast pocket;
- Capper & Capper suits;
- A bowl of nuts in the shell and a nutcracker set on a hearth, next to a recliner;
- The drive from Chicago to Boston and back in a Ford Country Squire station wagon;
- Slide rules;
- Elaborate menus for home dinner parties;
- A snore that rattles the walls;
- Fried bologna or fried salami on white bread with yellow mustard;
- Church ushers;
- Grace Kelly, Veronica Lake or Julie Andrews considered a hottie;
- Cotton handkerchiefs, freshly washed and ironed and smelling of spray sizing, in his left front pocket;
- Blenders full of frozen daiquiris at patio parties in the summer;
- Precise printing and cursive handwriting;
- PGA and LPGA golf on television;
- Church league softball games;
- The scent of Right Guard anti-perspirant;
- A deep, steady heartbeat;
- His favorite song, from his favorite movie:
- The phrase, "I'm just resting my eyes."
I miss him on Father's Day and every day.
Viva Mexico!

Kerrcarto also makes a Mexican (wildly politically incorrect) funny here, which I found just in time for Cinco de Mayo.

Yes, I've been a bad blogger. But I've also been a busy girl. I'll try harder, m'kay?

For a dear friend, Moonbeam McQueen's post here should speak straight to your heart. 2011 will be a good year for you, too.

Photography and friendship -- no wonder I loved this story!

Given that parts and cars out of Japan are going to be scarce for a good long time, it seems pretty stupid to have the tax paying public fund discounts for GM cars once again. Ford has managed to not only survive, but to thrive on its own. It's time for GM to do the same.

Given that I found my own St. Paddy's Day hat, filled with Popeye's chicken nuggets, in the refrigerator it makes absolute sense to me to look for the remote in the freezer. (And, no -- don't ask.)

Yes, I'm loving food trucks here in Chicago, but I find the idea of A Game of Thrones food truck more than a bit odd, even if Tom Colicchio is behind the menu.
More info on the food truck here and here. HBO really has gone nuts on promoting this series, as evidenced by the themed store it's opened in Manhattan.
Fantasy fiction lovers are the new cool. Who knew?

Speaking of AGOT, 1600 pages into the next manuscript and it's still not done and turned in??? George'll never make the July deadline... but I've been saying that all along.

DWTS -- I'm pretty sure the DJ is outta here tonight. Who do you think will be voted off?

During his trip, Bieber took his own pictures. He took a few final shots with Roche and one of her brothers, and then they put the film canister outside the Café des Deux Moulins in Montmartre, the restaurant where Amelie works in the movie.In the canister, they left a note that read, "It happened once, it can happen again. If you find me, I can buy you coffee and we'll become friends. It's the beginning of an adventure."
I love DSL, but you'll never find that creating this kind of story... unless the whole camera is lost and then found.

Quick Stop

If you ever needed a good excuse to eat chocolate, you're in luck:
So you missed National Bittersweet Chocolate Day (Jan. 10) and National Chocolate Souffle Day (Feb. 28) and National Covered Raisin Day (March 24) and National Chocolate Milkshake Day (Sept. 12) and who knows how many more such chocolate-flavored holidays! Stop right now!Mark your calendars accordingly... and don't say I never did anything for you. If you don't do it for yourselves, do it in honor of the Princess Mom, for whom this was a personal holiday.
That's right: Take a moment (or an hour) this October 28 to celebrate National Chocolate Day.
Sunday Schedule
I had another nocturnal visitation last night. This time, my spirit guide was this old friend. The dream again involved water and a journey. And Diana wasn't blind, but she was still as delightfully sunny and outgoing as I remember her, and she chattered away as she led me to where she wanted me to go. Where was that? I don't know. It was more about the journey than the destination.
Two days in a row, I've awakened refreshed and happy.

I sure wish I could pass a little bit of that peace I'm feeling onto the Wortham family, who laid a truly good man to rest yesterday:
I sure hope not, for his memory's sake.While serving in Iraq, Wortham led soldiers over dangerous routes and worked with his mother to get school supplies for Iraqi children. In Englewood, he policed an impoverished and at times desperate place on the busy night shift. And in Chatham, his neighborhood, he defended the safe and loving environment where he was raised against encroaching violence by leading a community group.On Friday, from those who hold the highest offices in this state to the sister who played with him on those Chatham streets, a promise was made in Wortham's name: Nobody is giving up.

There's another special group that honors Memorial Day here in Chicago, and it's not who you think -- it's circus veterans. Go here for the whole cool story.
