"Reading the book is like peering
through the windows of a big dolls' house and catching glimpses of lots of
well-crafted, ill-assorted, flickeringly lighted interiors. The effect is
superficially attractive but unsatisfying."
... I might just have to read the damned thingThe Rule of the Clan myself to see just how truly bad it is!

The schools are public. The funds to be spent are public. On one side of the table is a public body. Why shouldn't the public have a seat at that table, if only to listen in through the media to the offers and counter-offers?
Negotiating a contract of this dimension is a major governmental act — far more significant than many of the twists of the statutory knob that must, by law, be performed by legislative bodies at open meetings.
Closed doors are antithetical to democracy. Our traditions tell us that public oversight and input not only help keep officials honest, but also aid them in their quest to represent the will of the people (assuming that is their quest).
In the case of teachers union negotiations, parents are major stakeholders — even more so than most taxpayers — yet are totally shut out of the process until the parties emerge from marathon bargaining sessions brandishing a settlement.
I don't always see eye-to-eye with Zorn, but on this topic he's bang on the money. Go read the whole thing. And then go buy this book. It's guaranteed to set your hair on fire!
_____
On a snowy Wednesday evening, in a back meeting room at the main branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, 15 women sat at 15 different tables. Fourteen men sat down with each, briefly, for a micro-date.
As any single woman in a city will tell you, the dating scene is lopsided. Speed-dating sessions at the public library are no different. There were supposed to be 15 guys, but the library had a hard time filling those seats. They had to turn away 25 women.
Because it is a library, they brought books as ice breakers.
I actually think this is a great idea. I'd probably bring 911 and Home by Mark D. Paulson. Having a first edition, signed by the author, with a mention in the credits? A guaranteed conversation starter.
What book would you bring to the table?
_____
If you've left me a voicemail message in the past few weeks and didn't hear back from me... I got a new smart phone that's WAY smarter than me. Glad to see that I'm not the only one that feels that way.
Have patience.
I'm getting there. (It only took me a month to figure out how to retrieve emails. Sheesh.)
_____
If this is true...
The speed someone walks may predict the likelihood of developing dementia later in life, according to researchers in the US.
... then I'm going to be sharp as a tack well into my old age.
And if this is true...
They also told a conference that grip strength in middle-age was linked to the chance of a stroke.
... I'm going to have the ticker of a teenager for the rest of my born days.
Givenmyhistory with Chicago cabs, this is very good news indeed:
[C]ity officials are focusing on a new ordinance — it's set to go into effect this summer — they say will be easier to enforce and finally hold cab companies accountable for repeat offenders they let behind the wheel.
"One of the reasons why we took on the challenge of rewriting the ordinance is because we needed it to be clear, crisp and easy to enforce," said Rosemary Krimbel, commissioner of the Business Affairs and Consumer Protection department.

Oh, really? And how are all those folks on the public dole going to handle it when they get turned away from the emergency room for their cold and flu symptoms and free pregnancy tests? _____
It sucks being a fiscal conservative these days, because I really am not crazy about any of the Republican candidates at the moment. That being said, William A. Jacobson penned a thoughtful post on why Newt Gingrich may end up being the best choice right now. _____
Authorities in a state in Brazil's northeast are scrambling to take the fright and the bite off the beach after piranhas sunk their teeth into about 100 beachgoers, UOL Noticias reported.
The problem -- rather fearsome given piranhas' horror-movie teeth and ability to sink them into human flesh -- has been the biggest at the main beach area in Piaui state; authorities said they need to act fast to reduce a piranha overpopulation situation.
Last weekend, at least 100 bathers were treated at the hospital in Jose de Freitas not far from Terezina, Piaui's capital, after being bitten on the heels or toes at the local beach.
Ay caramba! _____
When I heard they'd signed Katherine Heigl to play Stephanie Plum, I knew One for the Money was going to be bad... but I had no idea it was going to be this bad:
Seriously, that's some of the worst casting since The Bridges of Madison County, which I also predicted would be awful, given the horrible miscasting of Eastwood and Streep.
Don't bother with the movie, but do get the book, which is hilarious. _____

Do you have a BoA or Chase credit card? Then you may want to pay attention to this:
If you have a credit card account with Bank of America or Chase, two of the nation’s largest banks, a major security flaw has been exposed that could make your information vulnerable to an Internet crook – or even a nosy neighbor.
Consumer advocate Edgar Dworsky of ConsumerWorld.org, who discovered the flaw, says anyone who knows your phone number and has the last four digits of your Chase or BofA credit card number might be able access your account.
Here’s the flaw Dworsky uncovered: When you call a bank’s automated credit card account information system, the computer uses caller ID to compare the number you’re calling from with the one on the account (usually your home phone).
At BofA and Chase, if the phone number is a match, the verification process is streamlined. Rather than requiring the entire credit card number to be entered, the caller can usually access the account with only the last four digits. In some cases, a zip code is also required.
“The last four digits of your credit card number are just out there so predominantly,” Dworsky says. “If you look at any sales receipt, it always has those last four digits.”
In order for someone to take advantage of this security loophole, they’d have to trick the bank’s computer to make it appear the call is coming from your home phone. Internet “spoofing” sites make this incredibly easy to do. Con artists have been using this technology for years, and it is how those British tabloid reporters were able to hack into so many voicemail systems.
From Joan of Argghh! a three hankie weeper. Seriously. Don't click on the link without an entire box of tissues at hand.

Graumagus has finally resurfaced. Yay! Now we can once again enjoy pithy posts such as this.
The man truly does employ a unique turn of phrase...

Update: Folks ending up here run the gamut from searches on "ass burgers" to "examples of inviolability of human dignity."
For all you GRRM/Game of Thrones fan-geeks like me, Maureen Ryan (whose column I miss in the Chicago Tribune, dammit) has Part 1 of her interview with him here and Part 2 is here. Good stuff.
_____
Ooooh! And you can now stream Season One of Game of Thrones on your computer. Sweet!
_____
Two-thirds of those who have come before magistrates have been remanded in custody and a large number have been sent to Crown Courts, which have powers to hand down prison sentences of longer than six months.
Justice Minister Jonathan Djanogly said: 'Yesterday and today I met court staff and judges who had worked 30 hours straight.
'We will continue to provide all necessary support to the police to ensure anyone involved in this kind of criminal activity is brought to justice as swiftly as possible.'
A Ministry of Justice spokesman added: 'We have enough prison places for those that are sentenced to custody after these incidents. There is substantial capacity in the prison and youth justice system.'
In addition, the papers are shaming by naming names. LOTS of names. Well done.
Other governments have used brightly colored dye to mark and arrest people. The tactic has been used in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir, Hungary, Bangladesh, Uganda, South Korea and Indonesia.

Are there really no good new story lines, for cripe's sake??? Now they're bringing the Munster's back... and making them... edgier... darker. It was a comedy! It's not supposed to be "dark" dammit.
The popping of zits is disgusting, on his back is even grosser, doing it in a public restaurant is appalling.
But the thing that really blows my mind is that he had enough back zits that he could take ten whole minutes to pop them and still not be done. *Shudder*
I don't know about you, but I feel like I need to shower in Lysol now.
_____
A fistful of small unstretched canvas paintings that turned to bits of colored cotton knit fabric in my hands because I took too long to pick which one I wanted;
A fantastic pillow-strewn bed with beautiful cream colored linens perched high on the side of a hill overlooking a lake. The sun was behind the waves of the lake, revealing schools of shimmering fish and mermaids;
Skeet shooting;
Gorgeous architectural arches with a twilight sky beyond them. I have to choose either to go get my camera and possibly miss the shot because night will have fallen before I get back or to just stay and enjoy the view, knowing I have missed a perfect photo opportunity;
The Princess Mom and my sister.
That's just the bits I remember over a couple of days. Ack. _____
The way things are going, I'll see you in my dreams!
Back in my youth I once read my way through a chicken burning so badly that it welded itself to the pan, which had to be tossed. I was so wrapped up in my book that I didn't see or smell the smoke that had filled the entire first level of the house. (So it's no wonder that i can read in the middle of a very busy and noisy sports bar and not be distracted.)
I can now validly claim limited brain capacity... _____
When you truly believe you're going to get returns like that, you might want to remember Bernie Madoff and how well promises like that worked out for his clients.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. _____
By way of summary, President Obama has developed a doctrinal approach to international affairs that differs not only from that of his immediate predecessor, but from any doctrine ever embraced by any major power. He eschews the notion of national interest, pays undue deference to international actors who may or may not mean us well, and deploys American troops without clear objectives or lines of command.
In short, he has delivered precisely the foreign policy that he promised to deliver. [Emphasis mine]
While not much news from the Middle East is amusing these days, I am finding humor in the fact that no one seems to agree on the correct spelling of a certain Libyan leader's first or last name in English. I'd turn it into a drinking game -- you drink every time you spot a different spelling -- but I'd be passed out on the floor before I could get through the evening news or the headlines on the Drudge Report. _____
Who will fight this effort the most? The teachers union, of course. _____
If you have a pet, whether cat, dog, ferret, bird or turtle, print this article and tape it inside a kitchen cabinet or medicine chest. You may thank me for that one day. _____
Not getting enough sleep these days? Put the tech toys down at least an hour before you go to bed. (Unless, of course, you have a Kindle or Nook or any other e-reader with e-ink.) _____
Ya think? That's just a sad state of affairs. _____
Every photo on this page is breathtakingly beautiful. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! _____
I have a good friend in her mid-40's who just had her second heart attack. As she says, when it comes to smoking, not quitting is "not an option" any more.
My recent passion for biographies and autobiographies led me to my current read, Hero: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia, by Michael Korda. Oddly enough, I started reading it just before all Hell broke loose in Egypt and I'm still plowing through it as the Middle East sends itself up for grabs. Much of what is happening began with T.E. Lawrence -- the use of guerilla warfare and his prediction that Britain's and France's carving up of the Middle East in World War I would have grave consequences in the future -- and is spot-on relevant to what is happening right now.
I don't have much use for Socialists, to be sure, but I'll make an exception for Senator Bernie Sanders on this issue, at least:
The last you heard from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, he was filibustering President Obama's tax-cut deal with the GOP. Today, the Independent and self-described socialist has his eyes on a different Washington target: the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
Sensing an opportunity in Chinese President Hu Jintao's stateside visit, Sanders is attacking the museum for its practice of selling tchochkes made abroad—mostly in China—in the gift shop.
Right on, Senator! _____
For those of you who think Michael Vick has learned his lesson and is truly sorry for what he did to all those dogs he abused so badly, take a gander at this video of how he and his band of thugs deal with the owner of one of those rescued dogs:
Tell me again why Michael Vick should have a second chance at owning a dog??? He may be a great football player, but, as far as I'm concerned he's a piss-poor excuse for a human being. _____

While I do have a particularfavoritebreedin eachof thesevengroups, I do try to hold off picking favorites until I see the dogs in the ring. There are always a few who stand out not only because of their beautiful conformation, but because they have a love of showing off and they just plain sparkle more.
So... if you're as nuts about the Westminster as I am, weigh in in the comments tonight as to your own favorites.
On what network can you find the dog show? On USA Network, starting at 8-9 p.m. ET or CNBC at 9-11 p.m. ET tonight and on USA Network from 8-11 p.m. tomorrow. (I'm watching one network tonight and another tomorrow.)
“All of the sudden, I realized, my God, am I 16 again?” she said “What’s the matter with me? I was sitting there hoping he’d call! It just surprised me that I was having that good of a time.”
