Leslie's Omnibus

Down Memory Lane

Harper's post about Obamanomics and buying a new refrigerator brought to mind the Princess Mom.

Why?

This quote: "In anticipation of delivery day, I need to go pull the old fridge out and clean behind and underneath it, so my grandmother isn't rolling over in her grave in embarrassment at my lack of domestic dedication."

The Princess Mom and Darling Daddy moved to Naperville in 1976, bringing along with them the suitably fashionable dark brown fridge and stove that they'd purchased for our previous home. The fridge was squeezed into a niche in between a pair of pantries, leaving about three inches of clearance on either side.

When the old fridge finally started showing signs of imminent death in the early 90's, Darling Daddy dragged TPM off to Sears to purchase a new one. In anticipation of its delivery, DD pulled the old fridge out to clean behind it. As he did so, TPM was edging her way out of the room and looking more than a bit apprehensive.

In the meantime DD was shocked perplexed to find a sooty black streak reaching from the electrical outlet three feet up the wall behind the refrigerator.

There was a pause, then DD got a "Luuuuuuuuuuuuuu-seeeeeee! Joo got some 'splainin' to do" look on his face.

Caught, TPM admitted that during one of her own overly zealous cleaning sprees, she'd pulled the fridge out to clean behind it, and inadvertently unplugged it in the process. Because of the short length of the cord, the depth of the niche and the lack of maneuvering room on either side of the thing, she needed longer arms or something to extend her reach... and DD's favorite barbeque fork was just the tool for the job.

Apparently she blew herself across the kitchen in the process, but she did manage to get the plug into the socket. (How she escaped killing herself is beyond me.)

Rather than let anyone know what she'd done, she simply pushed the fridge back in place and never moved it again. (So that's where the sneaky gene comes from in the family.)
